Skateboarding, Graphic Design, Illustration – these forms of expression are linked in an almost classical way with today’s „Street“ –culture. For more than two decades by now, skateboarding has accompanied the life of Christian Rothenhagen – the guy behind deerBLN – directed his interest towards illustration and design – and originated the small, unexcited work/label/output „deerBLN“.
This moniker corresponds to himself, his buddies and a small circle of interested people – and to the city, the influence of which can in no way be absent from the artwork of Christian Rothenhagen.
It’s also the vision of a Berliner referring to urban changes. And a „THANK YOU“ to the old wall-city.

The works of Christian Rothenhagen confront his urban surroundings – the decay, conurbation and agglomeration. The style in which he presents his works is a cross over of design and art. He lets his viewers enter the street life of Berlin. The drawings one gets to see, is a map of Berlin, the way it is and what is becoming of it. It is as if you are experiencing the inside, feeling the edges and viewing the so-called dark corners known as the desolate and unfriendly urban areas. Christian relates to his city and shows the changes and fragments. To realize the demolition of a building, which has guided him through his youth and a new one, is arising at the same spot shows the development the city is experiencing.

Skateboarding, Graphik Design, Illustration – beinahe klassisch sind diese Ausdruckformen mit der heutigen ”Street” Kultur verwoben. Seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten hinweg begleitet Skateboarding das Leben von Christian Rothenhagen, lenkte das Interesse auf Illustrationen und Design – und führte u.a. zu dem kleinen, unaufgeregten Output ”DeerBLN”.
Für sich, seine Buddies und einen stetig wachsenden Kreis von Interessierten ist dieser Moniker gedacht – und für die Stadt, deren Einfluss aus dem Artwork von Christian Rothenhagen nicht wegzudenken ist. Es ist auch der Blick eines Berliners auf die Veränderungen seiner Stadt. Und ein Dankeschön an die alte Wall-City.

ABRISS wird zum Thema der Ausstellung in der galerie OPEN, da sich der Künstler mit der Architektur auseinander setzt, Architektur aus verschiedener Zeit.

Christian Rothenhagen bewegt sich in seiner Arbeit auf der Grenze zwischen Design und Kunst. Seine Werke sind geprägt vom Lebensgefühl der Groß-Stadt – Urbanität als lifestyle aber auch als Denkmodell. Dabei ist Berlin unverkennbar seine home base - so dokumentiert er die Transformationsprozesse „seiner“ Stadt – den Abriss, aber auch den Aufbau – in seinen Illustrationen, Installationen...etc.
