Artist Statement

Through an assortment of media and various themes, the projects I create have a singular intention for the viewer: to create a disruption of thought, an interruption of the comfortable indexed system of comprehension. It is imperative that a critical dialogue is created with the viewer. The oppressive structures of race and class for example, are examined, documented, and potentially deconstructed, through a discourse that I instigate with my work. The complex weave of social spheres from which countless cultural and political bodies arise, are the areas that I navigate in. Performance is the of my work, which is rendered through media, such as photography, objects, and video. I often use myself as a representation of the “other”, or people outside dominant culture. Mainly, I use myself, and the politics of my body in works that occasionally result in semi-autobiographical themes, which seek to create a broader discourse. Context becomes the crucial factor—whether it is a specific country, a physical structure, a psychological state, a metaphysical space, or a corporate system; the histories or formal properties from these spaces contain the information that I work with. Frequently, the works are filtered through a lens of the surreal and the absurd, while being humorous and ethereal. These devices are employed to seduce the viewer into a conversation of subject matter that is often ignored.
